Statement terrace

The Statement terrace is a terrace containing a heading, a block of text, an optional button, and an optional background image.

On desktop, the heading, text, and button occupy the left 40 percent of the terrace, and the image fills the right 60 percent behind a gradient. On mobile, the image is not the background; it is displayed below the text as a 16:9 band.

A Statement terrace on desktop. The heading Welcome, the text, and a Click here to Register button occupy the left 40 percent against a blue background. The image of coloured pencils around a bison logo occupies the right 60 percent, with the blue gradient covering its left edge. A scrollbar runs down the right side of the text

The same terrace on mobile. The heading, the scrolling text, and the button are stacked in a single column on the blue background, and the image is displayed below the button as a wide 16:9 band

A page contains at most one Statement terrace.

Turning the terrace on and off

  1. Click the + (Add content) button in the admin menu.
  2. Click Terrace Menu.
  3. Toggle Statement on.

Toggling the terrace off hides it and retains its heading, text, image, button, and color. Toggling it on again restores them. The pencil menu on the terrace contains a second control for this, Turn Off Statement Terrace.

Opening the editor

Click the pencil on the terrace and click Edit. The terrace is replaced in place by an editing panel. Save and Exit saves the changes and closes the panel. Cancel discards them.

Save and Exit is disabled while a required field is empty. Two fields are conditionally required: alt text, when a background image is set, and button text and link, when the button is on.

The Statement editing panel in three columns. The left column holds the heading with a pencil, the rich text editor with its toolbar, an Edit in Markdown (advanced) link, and the Save and Exit and Cancel buttons. The middle column holds Display Button switched on, Button Text reading Click here to Register with a 22 of 40 counter, a URL row showing a page path with a pencil, and Button Preview. The right column holds the image guidance text, the image with Replace Image and Delete Image, an Alt Text field reading Students, and Background Color set to Theme

Heading

The heading is edited in place. Click it, type, and press Enter to save or Escape to cancel. The heading holds 250 characters.

A terrace whose heading has never been set displays the word Statement. A heading saved as an empty field is not displayed to visitors. Editors continue to see the Add Title placeholder in its position.

Text

The text field is a rich text editor. The toolbar contains undo, redo, heading, bulleted list, numbered list, quote, bold, italic, and link. Edit in Markdown (advanced) replaces the editor with a markdown field. Edit in Rich Text returns to the editor.

The text is displayed in a scrolling area of fixed height. The area does not expand and the terrace does not grow with the text. Text longer than about 90 words scrolls within the area.

Text entered here is indexed by site search.

Button

Display Button adds a button below the text.

Field Behavior
Button Text Holds 40 characters
Button Link Type Internal searches the pages of your site and offers your Contact Us form. External takes a full web address
URL The destination. For an internal link it displays the selected page's path with a pencil that reopens the search
Button Preview Displays the button as configured. Appears once button text is entered

The button takes its colors from the terrace Background Color. It has no style settings.

Background image

Upload Image opens a file picker, then a crop window. Save in the crop window uploads the cropped image. Replace Image repeats the process. Delete Image removes the image.

The editor states: Upload a background image. Ideal image ratio is 4:1 (horizontal) but actual image displayed will vary based on device. The crop window does not constrain the crop to 4:1.

JPEG, PNG, WebP, and BMP files are compressed to 2 megabytes during upload. Other formats are not compressed and are refused above 2 megabytes. All crops are saved as PNG.

Alt Text is displayed once an image is set and is required. Its contents are the image's alt text.

A terrace with no image displays a solid color.

Background Color

Background Color displays the current value and opens a menu of three.

Value Background Text
Dark Black White
Light Near-white Dark grey
Theme The site's Blocks brand color Set automatically for contrast

The value also sets the color of the gradient over the background image and the color of the text scrollbar. The gradient runs left to right: opaque at 40 percent of the terrace width, transparent at 60 percent. The left portion of the image is therefore covered.

Constraints

  • The terrace has one height. There is no height setting.
  • The terrace can be moved with Move Up and Move Down, but not above the Hero Banner or below the Map.
  • Text longer than the 290-pixel area scrolls; it does not enlarge the terrace.

FAQ

  • "Our text scrolls inside the terrace. Can the terrace be made taller?" No. The text area has a fixed height and no height setting. Text under about 90 words does not scroll. Longer text belongs in an About or Accordion terrace.
  • "Can our mission statement be part of the image?" It can, but the words are then unavailable to screen readers and to the site's translation tool, and cannot be edited without replacing the file. Text entered in the text field is available to both.
  • "Why is Save and Exit disabled?" A required field is empty. An image requires alt text; a button that is on requires both button text and a link.
  • "Why is the image missing on mobile?" It is not missing. On mobile the image is not the background; it is displayed below the text as a 16:9 band.
  • "Why will the image not upload?" JPEG, PNG, WebP, and BMP files are compressed automatically. HEIC, TIFF, SVG, and GIF files are refused above 2 megabytes. Save the file as JPEG or PNG.
