SIS roster sync (students and guardians)
SIS roster sync brings students, guardians, classes, and enrollments into SchoolBlocks from your Student Information System. It is separate from staff directory sync, which brings in staff and teachers from Google or Microsoft. The two run independently. Having one does not give you the other.
Check whether it's turned on
- Go to Organization Settings on your district (top-level) site.
- Open the SIS Roster Sync tab.
The tab shows a status badge — green Enabled or red Disabled.
The SIS Roster Sync tab only appears on your top-level district organization. If you're on an individual school site and don't see the tab, switch to the district site.
Turning it on isn't self-service
If the badge says Disabled, there is no toggle to flip. Enabling it requires configuration on our side. Contact support to get it turned on. That is what the tab itself tells you.
Have this ready when you reach out, because it's what we'll need:
- Which SIS you use (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Skyward, and so on)
- Who your district's SIS administrator is — they'll need to approve the data connection
- Which schools should be in scope
What you get once it's on
Messaging students and guardians. Students and guardians become message recipients and notification audiences. You can reach them directly or through custom lists.
Guardian relationships. The sync carries student-to-guardian links. You can contact the right guardians for a student without maintaining a separate list by hand.
Classroom content feeds. Students are automatically subscribed to the classroom pages they're enrolled in. Content posted to a classroom page appears in those students' personalized feeds without anyone subscribing them manually.
Which systems are supported
SchoolBlocks reads rosters using OneRoster 1.1 through GG4L / SchoolDay. In practice that means any SIS that GG4L can connect to, which covers most of the major ones. If you are not sure whether yours is supported, ask support and name your SIS. That is quicker than checking a list.
Common questions
Our roster changed but SchoolBlocks hasn't caught up. The sync runs on a schedule, so changes are not instant. If a change is more than a day old and still missing, contact support. Give us the student's name and school so we can check that record.
A student is in the wrong class. Class membership comes from your SIS. Fix it in the SIS and it will flow through on the next sync. An edit made in SchoolBlocks would be overwritten anyway.
We don't want students or guardians in the directory. SIS roster data drives messaging and classroom feeds. It does not publish students to your public staff directory. If you see student data somewhere public and did not expect to, contact support. That is worth investigating.
Can we sync staff this way instead? No. Staff and teachers come from staff directory sync via Google or Microsoft. SIS roster sync doesn't replace it.
